Do you know about this non-surgical hair treatment done by the Kardashians?

In 2019, Kourtney Kardashian shone a light on a new treatment for her hair loss. "Today I'm getting platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is where they take your blood and spin it and they use your plasma and they inject it in my head for my hair to grow back", she said on an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians where she took the treatment due to a bald spot on her scalp. This along with many other factors made PRP Hair Treatment popular, and the goal of this blog is to shine a light on the procedure and how it works.

Today I'm getting platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which is where they take your blood and spin it and they use your plasma and they inject it in my head for my hair to grow back.

The PRP Hair Treatment procedure consists of 3 main steps.

  1. Drawing the blood: PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Platelets are a part of the blood which is responsible for blood coagulation, cell healing and cell rejuvenation. As such, PRP is taken from your own blood. For the first step, the required amount of blood is drawn from the patient.

  2. Separating the components: The vial holding the drawn blood is put in a centrifuge, where it is spun around at high speed until it is separated to multiple parts: Platelet-poor Plasma: Watery plasma which doesn't hold a lot of platelets. Platelet-rich Plasma: Plasma with a high concentration of platelets. Red blood cells

  3. The PRP is drawn into a syringe and is injected into the skin near the area with hair loss. This prompts cell growth and rejuvenation, including cells responsible for hair growth. As a result the client can see improved hair growth.

While PRP may not have results as drastic as hair transplants, it also has significantly less risks and takes significantly less time, and can even be used as a secondary treatment alongside other hair loss treatments. As PRP involves injecting your own blood back into your skin, it has minimal risks and zero risk of transmitting any blood related diseases. The procedure is very safe and only holds the same minor risks of any other injections.
